synopsis

POINTE
Getting screwed over backstage by my married-ex tears my heart into a million tiny pieces.
Sitting in the audience at the ballet with my former fling wasn’t my idea of fun.

I live in my pointe shoes, not even my ex can taint my love for ballet.
I hate the ballet. This on again/off again crap was getting old.

And then my whole world changes when I notice the smoldering gaze…
Then I look to the stage, and I can’t take my eyes off…

OF…
Leo Richards.
Adeline Parker.

Concentrating on anything except his sexy…everything, is impossible.
Her presence commands my attention…I’ve never experienced this before.

He makes me second-guess everything I’ve ever dreamed about.
She makes me question everything I’ve ever known.

Fighting him is a strategic sport—no clothes allowed.
All I can think about are her sexy ballerina legs wrapped around me—tutu definitely on.

BREAKING
Our scandalous rendezvous is plastered all over NYC’s tabloids.
Because of my status in Manhattan, now I’ve dragged her into the limelight.

My ex will stop at nothing to tear us apart.
Seriously powerful people forbid me to be with her.

Rumors about his past keep building.
I can’t tell her this secret.

When it came to Leo, I only knew the big things.
When it came to Adeline, I knew nothing about the little things.

But uncovering those things about him [her] may push us past our breaking point.

10 Fun Facts You Might Not Need to Know About #DaPep:

From KIMYE to BENNIFER. From BRANGELINA to TOMCAT.
Now we introduce to you…..DAPEP.
Amy DAws and Sarah J. PEPper.

Indie Authors. Best Friends. And now, Co-Authors.

Fun Facts:
1. They both love ranch. Sarah would bathe in it if it didn’t risk an infection.
2. They have little to no boundaries with each other…as became apparent at a book conference in Phoenix. They can’t share the details, but just know it was #MuchTooMuch
3. Sarah actually has a very small amount of ballet experience.
4. Amy once pretended to have ballet experience at church camp so she could get the dance solo. Jesus knew the truth.
5. Sarah has won three dance offs, aside from one. That eleven-year-old haunts her to this day.
6. Sarah & Amy live three minutes apart. And they measure all distance in time.
7. While writing the romantic scenes in Pointe of Breaking, Amy & Sarah couldn’t look each other in the eye.
8. They had no outline for Pointe of Breaking.
9.
Amy takes notes in a Hello Kitty notepad. Sarah takes notes in her head.
10. Amy is convinced that Sarah has a folder in her email account labeled “I hate Amy”. Sarah just laughs every time Amy asks her about it…The fact that she’s not denying it hasn’t escaped Amy’s attention.

Release Date Change

Some of you may have heard that Sarah J. Pepper and I pushed our release date back a week. It was a tough decision to make, especially when we had so many amazing bloggers post for our big cover reveal on Monday. We appreciate bloggers so so much and we hate for them to have to retract information to their followers because of our poor time management.

But it had to be done.

729d64ea2ed287b84d04184b89e67e0472ebe76213c4ea075882885b146b1176

Collaborating is no joke. You’d think it would come along quicker because you only have to do half of the work, but that’s just not the case. In many ways, it’s harder because everything has to be decided as a team. And you both have to be available to execute those decisions.

But let me tell you why it’s awesome:
1. I get to watch my own writing improve because I am being pushed harder than I ever have in my entire writing career by a peer I greatly respect.
2. I get to experience another author’s process and apply it to my own work.
3. I get to learn the art of patience and understanding and how sometimes personal life has to come before book life…even if I need a “friendly reminder” here and there. 🙂
4. I get to blab about these characters like they are real to one of my best friends who knows just as much about them….because she’s all in….just like me.

5. I get to work with one of my best friends on a project that we’re both equally passionate about. That feeling is euphoric. pepper-daws filmstrip copy

I’m sure there are more reasons, but you get the picture. This experience has been amazing and challenging and I’m growing and learning every day. So if bumping our release date back a week ensures that we get to check this box…

interview

*An in-depth interview on collaborating for a novel with Amy Daws and Sarah J. Pepper*

How did the two of you meet?
Sarah: At Barnes and Noble of course! Kinda cliché, I know but where else would two coffee addicts/book nerds go?
Amy: Yep. Good ‘ol B&N. Sarah and I live in the same town and I was in the process of writing a memoir about my struggles through multiple miscarriages. I was in dire need of publishing help so I basically Facebook stalked her until she agreed to meet up and help me!

Would you say it was Insta-Love?
Sarah: LMAO! Well, let’s just say that secrets were spilled and I left crying like a baby.
Amy: She was quite moved by my story. But that doesn’t take much. Pepper is a bawl baby. I would say it was definitely “insta-respect” on both sides. She was impressed that I knew as much as I did about publishing and I was impressed she’d written 12 books and knew basically EVERYTHING! It wasn’t long before we became great friends. Having another author in town to bounce ideas and frustrations off of over a cold cocktail is amaze-balls.

How did the idea for a collaboration come up?
Amy: It’s all Pepper’s fault! I blame her entirely. J Actually, it was just before the release of the 3rd book in my London Lovers Series and just after the release of her Snow White Lies. I was resistant at first because I couldn’t wrap my brain around breaking away from my London Lovers. But she sent me her first chapter and dang it…I was inspired. That’s all it took.
Sarah: Daws and I were at our lovely biweekly writer block session (aka drinks on some random night)(akaaka babbling about books because our husbands were so sick of hearing about this chapter or that). Anyways, earlier that day I watched the Take Me to Church ballet YouTube vid (on repeat) and fell freaking IN LOVE with the love, angst and torment. I wanted to do something a little different than my usual fantasy romances, so I pitched it to Daws… and so we fell into a world of tutus, pointe shoes and hot college boys 😉

Was the process of collaborating easier or harder than writing solo?
Sarah: Oh there was a give and take. Immediately after Daws agreed to do a collaboration with me, I was like OMG! WHAT ARE WE DOING?!?! WE ARE BOTH CONTROL FREAKS (I say with the utmost respect Daws) lol so I write the first chappy and email it to Daws,  secretly hoping she doesn’t scower her email like I do lol. I panicked and feared the demise of our friendship even though she hadn’t written a word. Lol, so to say I got cold feet was an understatement…. I was all prepared to give her the “maybe we shouldn’t do this together speech” when she sent me her follow up chappy….
I was like…
Omg, this is PURE GOLD!
I fell in love… it was instant. Lol, so I called Daws up and told her I was going to be a pain in the ass to work with. I am pretty sure she rolled her eyes like that wasn’t a secret lol. And the rest of the book followed a similar process.
Amy: It’s fun to have someone just as emotionally invested as you are in your story. So that was a positive. But overall, I’d say it’s a harder process. I’m used to an editor ripping my stuff apart, but it took a bit for me to be able to accept that from a peer. Working through creative differences was difficult. I remember telling her once when we were butting heads… “If you want this idea, you gotta sell me on it. Sell me on it and then we can do it!” That’s a lot of what our creative process was. Selling each other on our ideas. But that was exciting too!

Can we expect more collaborations between the two of you?
Amy: I don’t know! There’s a secondary character in our book that has peaked both of our interests. And Pepper and I live in the same town making collaborating really accessible. So who knows!
Sarah: Lol I am game but that all depends on our readers 😀

What can we expect from Pointe of Breaking: When Ivy League & Tutus Collide?
Amy: Angst. That’s the biggest thing I’d say. It’s an emotional, rollercoaster, angsty read. But there’s some humor peppered (see what I did there?) in to breathe lightness to the story. And it’s definitely got some sexy bits to it! It’s just a really deep love story about finding someone and pushing through the barriers that make relationships hard.
Sarah: Plus, we went back and forth with the chapters… so if any one chapter ends on a cliffhanger, I want you to imagine either Daws or I getting ready to affectionately strangle each other whilst thinking, “how am I going to fix this mess!”
Hehe, it was FUN!

What was the best part of collaborating with a friend?
Amy: I feel like working together and critiquing each other’s chapters enabled this amazing quality control for both of us. Pepper pushed my writing abilities for sure. Even more than my editor has in the past. My sister beta read and she said she could see a definite improvement in my writing. So that’s exciting to take and apply into my London Lovers Series!
Sarah: Knowing that Daws knows me—the real me. And since we are tight, we aren’t afraid to call each other out if we weren’t writing our best. Knowing that we each are committed to the story 100% helped a lot.

Any embarrassing stories to share from working together?
Sarah: Lol the sex scenes hahaha. I don’t think Daws realized how dirty I got!
Amy: Yes, the sex scenes were super weird at first!!! And we would talk to each other inside the word doc that we passed back and forth with comments in the margins that are definitely not fit for this interview! It was hilarious.

Lastly, because I have a thing about quotes…can you tell me the favorite quote that the other person wrote?
Amy: I made the comment: “Best thing you’ve written so far!” several times throughout the book. Pepper has a great lyrical quality to her writing that I envy. So there were many…but here’s just one: “I thought I was enough. The happiness that had once tingled through me like it was awakening my soul was now shredding it. Hopelessness replaced the hopeful.”
Sarah: “I f**king hate the ballet.” This line, this sole comment sold me on the collaboration. It was just soooo different from the chapter I previously wrote—such a completely different standpoint.
It was perfect.

Holy Collaboration Batman!

announce2

Once upon a time…in a land far far away…called South Dakota,
there lived a girl name Spicy Pepper.
Spicy Pepper was a fair maiden who wrote stories of epic paranormal adventures.
They were romantic in nature but took place in faraway places with magical powers and evil queens.

One day, a tall, but equally as fair maiden moved into the land.
The people called her Dawsy Style.
Dawsy Style had an odd obsession with all things British and wrote love stories that took place in the magical city of London.
Dawsy Style’s romantic stories made you weep and giggle in exaltation.

One day, Spicy Pepper and Dawsy Style met at a quaint little shop called Barnes & Noble.
There, the two bonded over books, writing, and all things literary.
Together, the two kindred spirits began a friendship for the ages.
One that involved shooting stupid videos and laughing at things only the two of them thought were funny.
It was a love story unlike any other.
So, rather than continue on their own book journey’s all by their lonesomes, the two chose to join forces for a collaboration to ruin all other collaborations.

And so…the real story began.
The story of a broken ballerina and an ivy league frat boy.
The story of a new adult romance that will have you flipping pages and feeling breathless.
The story of two friends…turning their love for each other into a love story for all.

excerpt

Brody pulls me into his room, shuts the door, and presses me up against the back of it. His lips connect with mine and he strokes his thumb tenderly along my jaw. I groan into his mouth at the forceful entry of his tongue. Brody doesn’t kiss like a college boy, he kisses like a man.

“I thought about you all night,” he moans against my lips, and comes back in, pulling my lower lip into his mouth and gently scraping his teeth along it as he releases it.

I instantly pull it into my mouth, sucking off the remnants of the searing kiss he just laid on me. “Damn,” I whisper.

“Damn what?” he whispers back.

“Damn, this is going to be so hard.” I scrape my hands through the sides of his hair and kiss him passionately, taking control and showing him that while I love the power of his kiss—I can match it. He presses his hips against me in response and I let my hands fall down to my sides, feeling at a loss with the epic arousal approaching.

He strokes his hands softly down my arms, then grabs my wrists and pushes them up above my shoulders, pinning them to the door. Holy Jesus, this is too much.

Author Interview
Hi Amy, thank you for agreeing to this interview. Tell us a little about yourself and your background?
I’m currently a TV commercial producer for a local network affiliate station in South Dakota. So I still have a day job…booo! But it’s not so bad. I write, shoot, and edit commercials for a living. So it’s creative and laid back. And really fun. I love it. But writing is definitely a huge passion of mine.

What started your writing?
Well, I went through many years of personal tragedies and sadness. I suffered from multiple miscarriages. In the course of about three years, I lost five babies. It was terrible. But magically, I got my happy ending. My daughter is two and feisty and cool and just badass. I love her like crazy. Anyways, after getting her, I realized how fortunate I was and what an incredible journey I went through. I call it tragically beautiful. I didn’t want to forget that journey and I wanted to be able to tell my daughter about it someday, so birthed my memoir, Chasing Hope.

Is Chasing Hope available for purchase?
Yes it is. I released it in May of 2014. It was my very first book and a huge learning experience for me in the book industry. It’s a true story obviously. It’s emotional and inspirational and will definitely make you go and hug your babies. I wrote it in a way where you read it like a novel, not necessarily a chronological autobiography. So I feel like I did something interesting there. I’m incredibly proud of it. The feedback has been amazing.

How did you branch out into fiction?
I’m a serial contemporary romance reader and really wanted to try my hand at a totally made up story. I wanted more creative freedom. With the memoir, I was limited. So birthed…A Broken Us, an adult contemporary romance. I released it in September of 2014.

What inspired you to write Becoming Us?
Well, Becoming Us, is the prequel to my, A Broken Us. A Broken Us starts off with a breakup…the title sort of gives it away, so I don’t think I’m revealing too much there. Anyways, I decided to write a prequel to that story because I was curious about Brody and Finley’s backstory. I had an idea in my head when I was writing A Broken Us…but I hadn’t totally flushed it out. The more I sat on it, the more curious I became! So…I thought…hey, I’ll write a prequel! If Star Wars can do it, why can’t I? J

What should the reading order be?
You can read Becoming Us and A Broken Us in any order, but I think now that both of the books are out, I’m going to suggest people start with the prequel. It gets you attached to Brody and Finley a bit more and it’ll make A Broken Us all the more powerful when you get to it!

Are these books a part of a series?
Yes! Becoming Us and A Broken Us are the beginnings of my London Lover Series. In both books, I created some amazing secondary characters that are demanding their stories to be finished/told. The secondary characters were easily fan favorites, so I’m excited to see how people respond when I give them full-length novels of their very own!

What’s going to be the third book in the London Lover series?
Leslie! Oh my goodness. Finley’s best friend, Leslie is SO LOUD in my head! She will not stop. I’ve been trying really hard to just focus on marketing Becoming Us and getting that out, but ideas for Leslie’s character keep screaming at me! I’ve had to cut numerous showers short because of Leslie. Don’t ask me why I get ideas in the shower because I have no damn clue! 😛 Leslie’s book is going to be called London Bound and it’s going to be very dramatic and even a little dark, which should be interesting because Leslie is such a silly, funny character. So there’s going to be a big juxtaposition worked in there that should be interesting. And Frank…I have to give Frank his HEA…and since he is Leslie’s gusband…he will definitely get some time to shine in London Bound. I can’t wait to really dive into all of that.

Synopsis:

Finley has been grabbing coffee at Chaz’s C-Store every morning for over a year. As a senior at K-State, she’s found her groove on campus and not much can shake her. When basketball God, Jake LaShae, strolls into Chaz’s, with his tall, broad, and lean bod…he gives Finley’s dreams material for weeks.
Jake appears to only want a friendship, but Finley thinks if she’s patient, it’ll turn into more. Then, scandalously hot, Brody, stumbles into her path, barefoot no less. Finley thinks his silly but sexy mannerisms might just be what she never knew she wanted.
Becoming Us takes you on a journey through all the fun and crazy drama that happens when you’re a senior in college…and falling in love.

Quick Interview With the Author:

Why did you decide to write a sequel, PRE-quel?
Besides the fact that I don’t think 99.9% of the things I do through? Well, the fact is, A Broken Us was a story in my head that I was aching to tell. I was ready to write it! So I did…in like two weeks. It was madness. It’s is an epic love story that begins when Brody and Finley are already many years into a relationship. But of course (title gives it away here), the story starts with a break up. So it’s about Finley’s journey to finding true love again. So it still reads like a wonderful, suspenseful, twisty, turny stand-alone love story! So, I released it. And it has been AWESOME hearing how much people love it! The reviews are amazing. It’s my debut novel, I’m incredibly proud of it.

Then what happened?
Then this weird voice in the back of my head (that sounded NOTHING like Gollum from Lord of the Rings, I swear) kept saying…college, college, COLLEGE. Go back to college! Write their back-story. Give me more! What happened with Jake and Olivia? What was Brody and Finley’s first date like? All of that! I wanted to tell it. So that’s why I decided to write a PREQUEL.

So what book should readers read first?
Either one. That’s the beauty of writing A Broken Us first…you’re most definitely not missing anything in A Broken Us, because “anything” wasn’t even written yet! If that makes sense. Both books will be great as stand alones. You can start with A Broken Us and then jump right in to Becoming Us. I’ll still include twists and turns and suspense and excitement. Heartbreak. The whole nine. I love it all!

Which story was easier to write?
A Broken Us…for sure. The idea just poured out of me. Becoming Us has been a bit more challenging, only because I’ve had to become younger in my mind. Writing Brody and Finley in the New Adult genre needs to sound a bit different than when they were 25 in A Broken Us. But it’s all still fun!

What’s next for you?
I’m going to finish up my memoir series, Chasing Peace, the SEQUEL (I did that one right…LOL!) to Chasing Hope. Then I have spin off book ideas/characters in mind for A Broken Us! Hint, hint…Leslie & Theo….and of course, the sexy Liam!

Excerpt:

I storm out of my apartment frustrated at Angela and in desperate need of air. I can’t keep doing this crap to myself. Tormenting myself over what Jake is thinking and why we’re no longer speaking. I mean, we go from being practically best friends to mere acquaintances. This makes no sense. I did nothing wrong.
I look up when I hear a door slam from across the parking lot and see a guy rushing down the steps of the upper level apartment that sits kiddy-corner from my building. My eyebrows knit together as he pads across the parking lot straight toward me.
“Hey,” he says looking up at me and holding a half empty black trash bag.
“Um, hi,” I reply figuring he’s going to ask me where the dumpster is.
“You’re Finley right?”
“Yeah, that’s me,” I reply feeling slightly surprised. He looks familiar. I know I’ve seen him around campus before but I’ve never spoken to him. I look him up and down and feel a stirring in my abdomen. He’s somehow managed to pull off comfortably sexy. I didn’t even know those two words could go together. He’s wearing a loose pair of athletic shorts and a white t-shirt that shows a nicely sculpted body underneath. Jesus, this guy has something. My eyes continue traveling downward and see that he’s completely barefoot. My excited perusal is momentarily distracted as I think about the nasty things that go down in this parking lot. No shoes is simply not safe.
“You work in the computer lab right? In the business building?” he asks scratching the back of his head. He has dark brown hair that looks like it has a natural curl to it, but it’s cut short on the sides. The top is slightly longer, long enough to yank on. Woah…where did that thought come from?
“Yeah! In the business building,” I answer and silently chastise myself because he just said business building. Get your shit together Finley.
The corners of his mouth turn down like he’s trying to contain a laugh. I absolutely like that look. I need to find more ways to make this man conceal laughter because it is hot as hell.
“You live here?” he asks changing hands with his garbage bag.
“Yep, that building.” I turn around and gesture back behind me.
“I just moved here this semester. I live with my buddy, Mark. His roommate bailed on him, so he needed someone to fill the space. I was in a month-to-month lease further off campus, so it worked out for me to move in.”
“That explains why I’ve not really seen you here.”
He tries to contain his laughter again and I get a good look at his eyes and have to take a big gulp of air to calm myself. His eyes are this gorgeous navy blue. They remind me of a really great dark denim wash. Those eyes, his dark, curly hair, and his creamy complexion make one delicious package. How have I over-looked this guy for so long?
“Where are you headed?” he asks and I see a twinge of nervousness fleet over his face.
“Chaz’s, I’m gonna grab a coffee or something. Honestly my roommate was just driving me nuts.”
“Cool, mind if I go with you?” he asks.
I glance down at his feet and look back up and my eyes collide into his sheepish smile. Another adorable look I must make him do over and over.
“Yeah, I, uh, should probably go grab some shoes.” He gestures for me to follow him and I can’t help myself. I follow.
